We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the engineering team responsible for the core components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, and networking and storage management. This position involves significant problem-solving in a fast-paced environment, with a focus on Linux server systems. As the Engineering Manager on the Foundations team, you will inspire and direct your team of engineers, driving Ubuntu to new heights. A deep understanding of Linux and Ubuntu, along with exceptional leadership abilities, is essential. You will lead the team, influence company culture, facilitate technical delivery, and shape strategy and execution. Key Responsibilities: - Lead and grow a distributed team of engineers. - Showcase sound engineering principles through active leadership. - Plan, estimate, and execute engineering projects. - Collaborate with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu. - Work alongside cross-functional leadership teams. - Promote and adopt modern software development practices. - Foster a collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values. - Ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps with other teams at Canonical. - Participate in remote work while attending in-person company sprints twice a year for 1-2 weeks. Qualifications: - Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm). - Proven experience in managing or leading software engineering teams. - Strong software engineering knowledge in areas such as Linux system architecture, boot processes, and familiarity with languages/tools like Java, GCC, Python, Rust, and Go. - Engagement with open source communities and processes.
