We are hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the engineering team responsible for essential components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, and networking/storage configuration and management. This dynamic and technical role is situated at the core of Linux server systems. You will directly influence the direction of Ubuntu by leading and inspiring a team of engineers, fostering a strong engineering culture, and driving technical delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and develop a distributed team of engineers.
- Apply sound engineering principles through hands-on leadership.
- Oversee planning, estimation, and execution.
- Collaborate with product management to define Ubuntu's vision and strategy.
- Engage with cross-functional leadership teams to drive alignment.
- Promote the adoption of modern software development practices.
- Cultivate a collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
- Ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps with other Canonical teams.
Work Conditions:
- Remote work with participation in in-person team sprints typically twice a year for 1-2 weeks.
Requirements:
- Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm).
- Proven management or leadership experience in software engineering.
- High-quality knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot processes, and toolchains (e.g., Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go).
- Active engagement with open-source communities and processes.
