We are hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the engineering team responsible for essential components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, and networking/storage configuration and management. This dynamic and technical role is situated at the core of Linux server systems. You will directly influence the direction of Ubuntu by leading and inspiring a team of engineers, fostering a strong engineering culture, and driving technical delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a distributed team of engineers.
  • Apply sound engineering principles through hands-on leadership.
  • Oversee planning, estimation, and execution.
  • Collaborate with product management to define Ubuntu's vision and strategy.
  • Engage with cross-functional leadership teams to drive alignment.
  • Promote the adoption of modern software development practices.
  • Cultivate a collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  • Ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps with other Canonical teams.

Work Conditions:

  • Remote work with participation in in-person team sprints typically twice a year for 1-2 weeks.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm).
  • Proven management or leadership experience in software engineering.
  • High-quality knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot processes, and toolchains (e.g., Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go).
  • Active engagement with open-source communities and processes.
