Position

Canonical is seeking multiple Senior/Staff Security Operations Engineers (SOC) to create a new team reporting to the CISO. The ideal candidates will have varying levels of experience, from deep expertise in defending critical assets against advanced threats to exceptional individuals with a strong personal interest in cyber defense who may have limited experience.

The Security Operations (SecOps) team is tasked with the design, implementation, and evolution of Canonical's security practices, techniques, tools, systems, and policies. This team is crucial in assuring the security and integrity of Canonical's internal infrastructure, data, and product deployments. Goals include not only securing Canonical but also contributing to the broader open source ecosystem by sharing knowledge and threat intelligence with the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement and evolve Canonical's Security Operation Center
  • Analyze and enhance Canonical's security architecture
  • Evaluate, select, and implement new security tools and practices
  • Identify, contain, and remediate security threats and cyber attacks
  • Contribute to open source threat intelligence initiatives
  • Conduct threat modeling, tabletop exercises, and other SecOps practices across cross-functional teams
  • Develop learning materials and publish thought leadership content
  • Plan and deliver SecOps work within Canonical's agile engineering framework
  • Collaborate with security leadership to present insights and influence change

What We Are Looking For:

  • An exceptional academic track record or compelling alternative experience in Computer Science or STEM
  • Previous experience in a Security Operations Center
  • Strong personal motivation in technology security
  • Expertise in threat modeling and risk management frameworks
  • Knowledge of security architecture and leading security tools
  • Experience with threat intelligence feeds and security risk management frameworks (NIST CSF, ISO27001)

Optional Qualifications:

  • Experience in offensive or defensive security teams
  • Familiarity with dealing with advanced persistent threats
