About the Job:
This fast-paced engineering role focuses on Linux-based software-defined infrastructure and applications, encompassing all layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN and Core networking), and platforms such as OpenStack and Kubernetes.

The position is designed for a technologist passionate about Linux and open source who seeks to build a career with Canonical, contributing to the success of customers, community, and the company. This role involves addressing critical issues in the open source stack and requires software engineering for upstream bug fixes. Engineers in this position should be able to work across various levels of the software stack, utilizing a wide range of programming languages to comprehend and rectify the software issues presented.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's field, support, and product engineering teams.
  • Participate in upstream communities and develop bug fixes, backport patches, and collaborate with upstream for inclusion.
  • Review code produced by other engineers.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in technical methodologies and prioritize work effectively.
  • Participate in team discussions to enhance processes, tools, and documentation.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Professional experience as a software engineer.
  • Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar.
  • Strong experience with Linux and at least one of the following: Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes or other cloud technologies.
  • Proficient in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • Ability to troubleshoot with debugging tools such as gdb.
  • Familiarity with git source code repositories and branches.

Additional Skills:

  • Curiosity, flexibility, and an eagerness to work with talented individuals.
  • Interest in technologies such as Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, and distributed systems.

Travel Requirements:
Willingness to travel internationally up to 10% of work time for team meetings, events, and conferences, including up to 4 times a year for internal events.

Language Requirements:
Proficiency in English is expected.
