About the Job:
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is utilized in groundbreaking initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are currently seeking a Software Support Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team focusing on Linux-based infrastructure and applications.

In this role, you will work on various components of the software stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph), networking (OVS, OVN), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open source applications utilized by large enterprise customers. You will be responsible for resolving complex customer issues related to these technologies and maintaining collaborative relationships with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer issues involving Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, or other open source software.
  • Maintain close collaboration with Canonical's various engineering teams.
  • Participate in upstream open source communities.
  • Develop bug fixes and backport patches while working towards upstream inclusion.
  • Demonstrate good judgment in applying technical methods and prioritize work effectively.
  • Engage in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation.

Language Requirements:
Proficiency in English and familiarity with programming languages such as Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux is required.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar fields.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Drive to learn new technologies and troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Curiosity, flexibility, and accountability in technology-related tasks.
  • Passion for technology and collaboration with skilled individuals.
  • Interest in learning about Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, and distributed systems.
