Position

The eBRAIN laboratory in the Division of Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Research Engineer position. This role focuses on the research and development (R&D) of advanced machine learning (ML) models such as Transformers, Vision Transformers, and Large Language Models (LLMs), specifically for vision-based applications. The research will apply to real-world use cases across various domains, including autonomous systems, robotics, and smart homes/cities.

The eBRAIN lab is dedicated to constructing energy-efficient and robust brain-inspired systems through cross-layer analysis and design methods that engage hardware, software, and system-level techniques synergistically. The lab, led by Prof. Muhammad Shafique, has extensive experience in cross-layer design and optimization for building AI/ML systems. The long-term vision involves integrating secure, energy-efficient electronic brains into modern cyber-physical systems (CPS) and IoT-Edge devices to develop assistive cognitive technologies aimed at benefiting humanity and the environment.

Successful applicants will drive large-scale projects investigating novel methods for deploying advanced ML models on resource-constrained embedded systems. This includes practical demonstrations in real-world contexts like medical image analysis and autonomous vehicles. The role emphasizes intellectual property generation, patenting, and producing high-quality publications in premier ML, AI, robotics, security, and systems conferences.

Requirements:

  • Master's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of ML, AI, deep neural networks (DNN), LLMs, multimodal LLMs, tinyML, and ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
  • Solid experience in ML system development.
  • Desirable: Knowledge in MLOps, robust computing, privacy-preserving ML, and ML security.
  • Experience in industry and/or publications in prominent ML venues preferred.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, analytical, communication, and writing skills.

Application Procedure:
The employment terms include a highly competitive salary with attractive benefits, including a generous housing allowance, medical insurance, an annual home leave allowance, and (if applicable) dependent private school fees. Salaries are tax-free in the UAE. Researchers will receive dedicated funds for travel, computing, and publications, along with access to excellent research facilities.

The preferred start date is as soon as possible, ideally in Summer 2025. Applications are accepted immediately and will be considered until the position is filled.

To apply, please submit the following documents in PDF format:

  • Cover letter
  • Detailed CV with R&D and programming skills
  • List of professional experience, demos, and scientific publications (if any)
  • University degrees and transcripts (with grades)
