Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, primarily known for its platform, Ubuntu, extensively used in areas such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. As an Embedded Linux Field Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of Field engineers in Presales and Professional Services activities, assisting customers with solution architecture, design, and delivery. Our mission is to enable companies to create secure connected devices. We provide the base Ubuntu OS and kernel with secure update and management mechanisms for developing control systems, gateways, and appliances that meet stringent quality and security standards. Field Engineers are key technologists helping our customers solve complex problems. They approach embedded Linux strategy and delivery hands-on and are committed to helping customers achieve significant technical and business goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of Field engineers in Presales and Professional Services.
  • Solve customer challenges by promoting our technologies and serving as a trusted advisor.
  • Collaborate remotely within a single major time zone.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback.
  • Identify and measure team health indicators.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Represent your team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices.
  • Plan and manage project progress against agreed goals.
  • Participate actively as a member of the leadership team.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record, including a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • Extensive experience with embedded Linux (Yocto or similar) and Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Golang, Python, C, C++, or Rust).
  • Experience managing a small team and engaging with customers.
  • Professional written and spoken English is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, accountability, and a results-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to communicate the business benefits of technology.

Desirable Traits:

  • RTOS experience.
  • Knowledge of additional programming or human languages.
  • Previous experience in a remote-first, diverse, distributed company.

Work Conditions:

  • This is a remote position requiring location within the Americas, EMEA, or APAC.
  • The role involves collaborating with teams across multiple time zones.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in professional written and spoken English is mandatory.
