Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely utilized in breakthrough enterprise initiatives, including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. This role is a general track for first-level engineering management positions at Canonical. We aim to make open source more accessible, reliable, and secure for deployment and development, striving to be the provider of 'most software to most companies.' Engineering Managers at Canonical are expected to be outstanding developers and help teams achieve more than they thought possible.

An Engineering Manager will lead a team of engineers, coach and mentor them, represent the team and product to stakeholders, and foster collaboration with customers. They will focus on developing engineering talent and driving collaboration across teams for successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers
  • Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback
  • Identify and measure team health indicators
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes
  • Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects
  • Collaborate with leadership and represent the team to stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic background with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Proven experience in leading, coaching, and mentoring software developers
  • Strong organizational skills to ensure timely high-quality results
  • Advanced expertise in your domain and a passion for software development
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events.

Additional Skills Valued:

  • Experience in developer advocacy or community roles
  • Ops and system administration experience
  • Performance engineering and security experience.
