Position

Canonical is seeking an Engineering Manager for our general track of first-level engineering management positions. As a part of our mission to transform the tech sector and enterprise compute through open source, we focus on making open source easier, more reliable, and secure for development and deployment. We are looking for talented engineers who are not only exceptional coders but also strong leaders capable of inspiring and guiding their teams.

Engineering Managers at Canonical are trusted engineers responsible for line management, career guidance, and driving collaboration with other teams and customers. They lead teams comprised of engineers at various levels, from graduate to senior, within a specific time zone. Managers are expected to coach and mentor their team, implement disciplined engineering processes, and represent their product and team to stakeholders.

We have roles open across various engineering domains such as Python, Golang, C/C++, Rust, data infrastructure, web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript/TypeScript/React), and more. Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers
  • Work remotely within a major time zone
  • Offer coaching, mentoring, and career development feedback
  • Identify and measure team health indicators
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes
  • Represent the team and product to stakeholders
  • Develop and evangelise great engineering and organizational practices
  • Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects
  • Collaborate actively with other leaders within the organization

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record in Computer Science or a related STEM field
  • Proven experience in leading, coaching, and mentoring software developers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to ensure timely, high-quality deliverables
  • Passionate about software development with solid experience in an agile environment
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events

Additional Skills We Value:
