Position

We are seeking a Lead Data Governance Engineer focused on developing and implementing data governance policies, processes, standards, and compliance monitoring in line with internal policies and regulations (e.g., GDPR, DPA, ISO). The successful candidate will develop Python-based tooling to automate internal data mesh operations, including data labeling and quality metrics, while ensuring adherence to data access management and data security best practices.

The Data Governance team’s mission is to enable secure and well-governed access to comprehensive data sets from various internal and external sources. We utilize established open-source data governance tools like Trino and Ranger, define and implement data governance processes, and work to democratize data across Canonical.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define, monitor, and execute data governance policies.
  • Design, implement, and maintain tooling for automated data mesh operations.
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team.
  • Depending on seniority, coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback.
  • Develop and promote excellent engineering and organizational practices.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or compelling alternative path.
  • Proven history of exceeding expectations to achieve outstanding results.
  • Experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools.
  • Software development experience in Python and SQL.
  • Proficient in both written and spoken English, with excellent presentation skills.
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Performance engineering and security experience.
  • Familiarity with tools like Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino.
