Your New Role
The CNN International team is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead development and operational support for the CNN International Digital Experience. This is a great opportunity for an individual that is passionate about delivering online news and information globally. CNN has ambitious plans to expand the international presence and build upon brands such as CNN Arabic and CNN Español. Come be a part of this exciting high-profile team!
As the Staff Software Engineer, you will assume a technical leadership role on the team and work with Product, Design and Engineers alike to deliver on product initiatives and operational execution. With your deep technical knowledge, you will lead conversations for planning, development, discovery and offer expert recommendations for tools, strategies, and best practices to help support delivery of best-in-class solutions and experiences. You will also perform hands-on development and troubleshooting as needed. You are excited to learn and ready to lead new challenges. You are an excellent communicator capable of assessing a technical task and breaking it into smaller tasks in partnership with other engineers and product. You are comfortable giving demos of your work and explaining technical details and requirements across teams. You align with the WBD Guiding Principles and contribute to improve the culture both from an interpersonal level and from a code improvement standpoint. You are a mentor to other engineers and support a growth Engineering culture.
Your Role Accountabilities
- Leads technical direction, discovery, execution, and delivery of new initiatives and provides operational support for solutions in production. This entails working across distributed and matrixed teams.
- Experienced with Agile and high-level planning, roadmaps, and sprint planning processes.
- Communicate effectively and facilitate meetings for collaboration efforts with other internal stakeholders. You are an excellent communicator capable of assessing a technical task and breaking it into smaller tasks in partnership with other engineers and product.
- Partner and collaborate with other teams at CNN to integrate shared tools and features (e.g. Platforms, Design Systems, Video, Advertisements).
- Contribute to documentation, peer reviews, and code quality efforts across the platform through thoughtful code reviews and ensure code standards.
Qualifications And Experience
- Full stack development experience, including coding abilities with JavaScript/React, Drupal/PHP, Python, HTML/Handlebars, CSS/SASS.
- Experience building, testing, shipping, and maintaining highly performant consumer applications.
- Experience with a wide range of technical topics, including AWS services, Cloud Platforms, frameworks, databases, API’s and SDKs.
- Understanding of engineering best practices for Web Vitals, Performance, Analytics and Accessibility.
- Other languages are a bonus: Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, and Hindi.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and experience in effectively communicating with a wide range of technical and non-technical job functions within an organization.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Ad Technology and integrating services / SDKs (third-party or otherwise) for ads, analytics, audience engagement, and media asset management.
- Knowledge of Operations, CI/CD, and DevOps.
- A|B testing and instrumentation experience for testing consumer-facing products.
- Experience with News, Media, and Entertainment Industries.
- Experience with WordPress and Drupal platforms.
