Position

This role is an opportunity for a hands-on, yet hands-off, senior technologist with a passion for Linux to build a career with Canonical and drive the success of those leveraging Ubuntu and open-source products. If you have experience with IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology, you will enjoy working with some of the best people in the industry at Canonical.

The IS team at Canonical supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, responsible for running services used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer, you will be in a unique position to drive operations automation to the next level in both private and public clouds. This involves utilizing the best of open source infrastructure as code software, embracing CI/CD pipelines, and leveraging Canonical's leading products for software operation automation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Driving the development of automation and Gitops as an embedded tech lead within your team.
  • Collaborating closely with the IS architect to align your solutions with the IS architecture vision.
  • Designing and architecting services that the IS team can offer to the organization as products.
  • Applying your experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to enhance automation and improve IaC processes.
  • Automating software operations for consistency across private and public clouds while considering the complexities of distributed systems.
  • Maintaining operational responsibility for Canonical's core services, networks, and infrastructure.
  • Developing skills in troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance investigation while using observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch.
  • Providing assistance and collaborating with a globally distributed engineering, operations, and support team.

What We Are Looking For:

  • A modern perspective on hosting architecture, driven by infrastructure as code principles.
  • A product-focused mindset aiming to develop products rather than simply solutions.
  • Experience in Python software development with large projects.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or other container orchestration systems.
  • Proven experience managing and deploying cloud infrastructure as code.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls, as well as various forms of Linux storage, from Ceph to Databases.
  • Hands-on experience administering enterprise-level Linux servers and extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in computer science or a related engineering field.
  • Strong communication skills in English (over email, chat, video, or voice calls).
  • Motivation and ability to troubleshoot technical issues and a willingness to learn new concepts quickly.
  • Passion for and familiarity with open-source technologies, particularly Ubuntu or Debian.

Language Requirements:

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English.

What We Offer You:

  • Competitive base pay with additional benefits, including annual bonuses and sales incentives.
  • Fully remote work environment established since 2004.
  • Personal learning and development budget of $2,000 per annum.
  • Annual compensation reviews and recognition rewards.
  • Annual holiday leave and parental leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities for travel to meet colleagues at 'sprints'.
  • Priority Pass for travel and travel upgrades for long-haul company events.
